Zulu King has called for the end of xenophobia

ZULU king Goodwill Zwelithini has called for an end to attacks on foreigners and the destruction of their businesses.

Addressing the multitudes attending the Shaka day celebrations at the George Goch Hostel in Johannesburg yesterday, the king criticised recent incidents during which foreigners were attacked while their businesses were looted and destroyed.

Zwelithini also used the opportunity to call for love, unity and peace among the people.

"Stop attacking foreigners and destroying their businesses. Start doing things by yourself. People need to start doing things that will benefit themselves.

"We need to have skills that will help us to survive instead of relying on foreigners," he said.

The king praised people of Gauteng for "their unity on the historic day".

"I am pleased that you have put your differences and politics aside to celebrate this day."

He also called on men who are HIV positive to stop spreading the disease.

"If you are married focus on your partner. Those who have (are HIV positive) must take anti-retroviral treatment."

There was an impressive display colourful display of traditional outfits at many similar activities across the country.

The George Goch event was graced by National Freedom Party leader Zanele Magwaza-Msibi, Zulu queens, princes, princesses , Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, Venda King Kennedy Tshivhase, Nkosi Sikhosana and chiefs.

A sense of respect prevailed when King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu arrived at the stadium.

All the men stood up to acknowledge the king's presence.

Then various praise poets took to the stage while the king sat in his special royal chair.

Mokonyane said the Gauteng government was working to ensure that various cultures tolerated each other.
